1/8/19

Parents,

Welcome back! Gosh, it has been SO great to see the kiddos today and get back into the swing of things. They are ready to rock and roll!

Lots of newness coming back from break! First off, the 1st grade teachers sat down yesterday and looked at data. We did this to reevaluate groups for Branches (our differentiated groups for literacy and math). Some kiddos were shifted to a higher or lower group for literacy and/or math, but most kiddos stayed in the same group. We try to be very targeted and strategic when it comes to these Branches groups because we believe in the power of differentiation and giving kids what they need.

We also are starting a new math module today involving:
  • place value (tens and ones)
  • comparing two-digit numbers using <, >, and =
  • addition and subtraction of 10s
  • addition of tens or ones to a two-digit number
  • addition and subtraction word problems within 20

In Superkids, we're still playing with contractions. This week, kids are learning irregular contractions. In writing, kids will be writing personal narratives.

We have library this Thursday, 1/10. Please have your 1st grader return his/her books by then so that he/she can checkout new books.

Mrs. Campbell, the art teacher, is looking for donations of old magazines, books, and newspapers so that she can make collages with the kiddos. If you have those at home, please either send them to the art room or send them to the classroom and I can get them there. Thanks!

Last thing - I plan on showing you results at spring conferences of your kiddo's mid-year assessment data from before break. I wasn't planning on sending that home before conferences but let me know if you'd like a copy of that data before conferences.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks a lot!

Amy
